Deep red volcanic coastline

Volcano side & edge of lagoon

Crater coastline

El Golfo is the site of a huge volcanic crater that has had half of one side eroded by the sea. These pictures show some of the incredible views available of this amazing crater. The rock striations all around the crater are quite complex, these can be seen in the photos above and above right. The small village of El Golfo stands just to the north of the crater.

Possibly the most famous view in all of Lanzarote, especially useful for film makers wishing to depict an 'alien landscape'. Most notably, this location (and others on the island) has been used in the science fiction film "Enemy Mine".

This picture shows the dramatic edge of the crater, with the green lagoon in the centre. The water enters via an underground route from the ocean and really is deep green in colour!

The pale and dark 'specks' to the right of the lagoon, half way down the picture are a mother with her child. They are walking on the fine black volcanic 'sand' common on the island.
