Pool-side palm

Located 250m from the north east coast, this is part of a natural cave complex formed during a prehistoric eruption of Monte Corona. The molten lava flowed from the volcano underground for 7 km to exit in the sea. Numerous hollow chambers were created, one of which forms a 2 km tour at Cueva de los Verdes to the west. Los Jameos del Agua became the subject of designer César Manrique. Here the caves formed stunning locations for a restaurant, night club, small bars and a 'private' pool. Between the two caves is a natural saltwater lagoon (above)connected to the sea underground. Living within are rare 3 cm albino crabs (Munidopsis polimorpha).

At the far end of the complex a concert hall has been created within the volcanic lava tubes. As a consequence of these geological origins, the acoustics are superb and regular concerts & ballets are performed here.

During the concert interval, attendees cannot resist viewing the rest of the complex where the lighting provides views quite distinct from those seen during daylight hours.

Members of the "Budapest Strings" are shown here receiving their applause after an excellent concert and moving encore.
